Curing is know as the process in which freshly cast concrete is kept in sufficiently wet or Humid condition fo certain period after compaction. So that the hydration reaction is achieved completely.
There are various method of curing, but the usual method requires at least 21 days of curing.
Different method/type of Curing :-
- spraying water
- membrance curing
- steam curing
- curing by intra-red radiation
- curing by wet gunny bags
- ponding methods
These are various methods of curing. These are used as per the Situation and the extent & the nature of the Concreting work.
Duration of curing :-
First of all, the concrete should not be dry fast in any situation.this Condition should be maintained for 24 hours. The best practice is to keep the concrete under wet gunny bags for 24 hours and then commence water curing by way of ponding or spraying.the concrete cured for a long time will be a costlier process.the curing period various For different structure, situation and different atmospheric temperature.for general guidance,it can be said that concrete must be cured at least for seven days.
This requirement applied to ordinary Portland cement and if rapid hardening cement is used, the period reduced sightly.on the other hand, for low heat cement, the curing should be extended to 21 Days. In cold weather regions, curing should be continued for a long time.
